Course Information

 

The prep ELT Certificate course for SQT teachers is recognised by The Advisory Council for English Language Schools (ACELS) who work under the auspices of the Department of Education and Science in Ireland. The course is intended for a wide range of candidates including those who:

  • have  successfully completed a course of study leading to conferral of a B.Ed or  H.Dip (Education);

or

  • have  completed a course of study leading to a B.Ed. or H.Dip (Education) and are  awaiting conferral of certification;

or

  • are in the process of doing an H.Dip (Education) course or are in their final year of a B.Ed. course.

(The successful candidate will only be eligible to teach on Junior courses in recognised ELT organisations upon successful completion of their B.Ed. / H.Dip. (Education) courses)


The course is run full time consisting of 30 hours over 5 days. This is broken up into:

  • Face-to-face seminars and workshops
  • Micro-teaching
  • Feedback
  • In-course and end-of-course assessment

The course generally takes place Monday - Friday, 9.00 - 4.00 - with the exception of Easter due to the Easter bank holidays.

 

There is also 10 hours of non-face-to-face work to be completed.

 

The Certificate for English Language Teaching to Second Level Students (State Qualified Teachers) gives the successful candidate the opportunity to work in Ireland in the lucrative Junior ELT sector.
(It does not enfranchise successful candidates to teach in the adult ELT sector and cannot be added to in order to gain full recognition).

 

Syllabus Areas

 

  • An overview of Junior programmes in Ireland
  • An introduction to the basic tenets of communicative language teaching and a range of practical activities to support the learners’ English language development and performance
  • An introduction to the preparation, planning and evaluation of teaching
  • An introduction to classroom management
  • An introduction to aspects of language description, e.g. (tenses, parts of speech etc) and meaning (use, functions, notions, style, register etc)
  • An introduction to a range of teaching techniques to support and facilitate the learning and development of:
    • Language awareness and grammar  
    • Vocabulary
    • The 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening (with emphasis  on speaking and listening) and integration of these skills  
  • Learner independence and autonomy
  • An introduction to selecting and adapting ELT course materials and resources suitable for use with junior students, with a particular focus on Council of Europe A2 to B2 levels
  • An introduction to monitoring and evaluating learning

 

Assessment & Certification

 

In order to pass the whole course and obtain a Certificate, candidates must

 

  • Attend 95% of all face-to-face seminars/workshops
  • Successfully complete all assignments
  • Successfully complete the Supervised Teaching Component in their first post in an Irish Dept. of Education & Science recognised school or Irish state school. The STC involves one observed lesson overseen by a supervisor (often the Director of Studies or school teacher trainer)

(Please note that the STC is required before the teacher can be fully certified for working in the recognised Junior EFL sector in Ireland, and that it needs to be done within a maximum of 3 years of completing the first part of the course with Edgewater College).

 

Course Fee:

€350 per person.

 

A deposit of €100 is required to secure your place on the course, payable upon receipt of your letter of acceptance. The balance should be paid no less than one week prior to course commencement.
