Irish Culture Course


Combining Irish culture and the English language, these courses are ideal for those interested in learning more about Ireland. The course focuses on the history and geography of Ireland, with art, literature and of course traditional Irish music. Course includes excursions and day trips to sites of interest all over Ireland.

 

 

 

Sample 1 week Junior Irish Culture Course

(suitable for 12-18 year olds)

Students will participate in a variety of afternoon activities and excursions that will relate to their morning class The students will be accompanied by a native English speaking Edgewater College supervisor and students will be encouraged to speak English at all times.

There will be organised, supervised activities every afternoon from 14.00 – 17.00. These will include sports, cultural and social activities. 

 

~ Brief Description of activity programme ~

Day 1 –

Arrive in Dublin airport, greeted by an Edgewater College representative, transfer to Host Family.

   

 

Day 2 –

 

Class from 09.00-13.00, lunch from 13.00-14.00. Students will enjoy a fun familiarisation Tour of Drogheda, followed by a Scavenger Hunt around the town of Drogheda. This requires students to ask questions and interact with natives, as well as gathering required information. The first team back with all the correct answers wins a prize. Students return home for dinner and evening with their host family.

 

 

 

Day 3 –

Class from 09.00-13.00, lunch from 13.00-14.00. Today the students will visit the famous Millmount Museum and Martello Tower, also known as the Cup and Saucer. Includes professional story-teller as guide and story-telling session, students will get ample opportunity to take photos of the breathtaking views of the town and surrounding areas.

  

 

Day 4 –

Class from 09.00-13.00, lunch from 13.00-14.00. Boyne Valley Tour - An educational and interesting trip to the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre interprets the Neolithic monuments of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. Newgrange was constructed over 5,000 years ago (about 3,200 B.C.), making it older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Newgrange was built during the Neolithic or New Stone Age by a farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne Valley. Knowth and Dowth are similar mounds that together with Newgrange have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

 

 

 

Day 5 –

Class from 09.00-13.00, lunch from 13.00-14.00. Irish Sports and Culture Day, the students will get to try their hand at some of the traditional Irish sports and music. Including Hurling, Gaelic Football, the tin whistle, the bodhran and lots more. This will also involve more modern Irish musicians and sports stars including U2, Westlife, The Cranberries etc.

 

 

Day 6 –

Class from 09.00-13.00, lunch from 13.00-14.00. After presenting their projects and getting their certificates, students will partake in a fun, interactive table quiz presented on powerpoint with a variety of interesting categories. Prizes for the winning teams.

That evening there will be a farewell party with an Irish dancing night- host families are also invited.

  

 

 

 

 

Day 7 –

 

Collection from host family, transfer to Dublin airport, students return home happy and full of knowledge about Ireland...
